The Sacred Fruit... Dried Fig
Fig culture in Anatolia is one of the fruits with the oldest development history among the cultivated fruits dating back as far as human history. Fig is native to Turkey and spread to China and India via Syria, Palestine and then to the Middle East.
Figs are produced in a very limited number of countries in the world, and accordingly, the number of countries producing dried figs is also quite small. Turkey is the world leader in both fresh and dried fig production and exports. The Aegean Region, especially Aydın and İzmir provinces, are the most important fig production regions of Turkey. This region is particularly famous for its “Sarılop” figs, which are ideal for both fresh and dried fig production.
Turkey's geographical location provides a logistical advantage in exports. In recent years, Turkey has diversified its transportation opportunities in rail and air transport, in addition to sea and land routes. Thanks to its strong infrastructure, Turkey is able to realize exports quickly.
