The avocado is a fruit originally native to Central and South America. Cultivated for thousands of years in Mexico and parts of Central America, avocados were called “ahuacatl” by the Aztecs. Avocados, which have been proven to exist as far back as 5000 BC, began to gain worldwide popularity after being introduced to Europe in the 16th century by Spanish explorers. Today, avocados are known for their healthy fat content and nutritional properties and have become a common fruit in many cuisines.

In recent years, avocados have become a major export crop worldwide and are exported to various countries in North America, Europe and Asia. Avocado exports have increased significantly with the rise of healthy living trends. The avocado's healthy fat content, nutritional properties and versatile uses have increased its popularity among consumers, which in turn has supported its exports. Approximately 40% of world avocado imports are accounted for by the United States. The US is followed by European Union (EU) countries such as the Netherlands (11.71%) and France (7.20%). Turkey is a net importer, with an average export unit value of USD 1,660/ton and an average import value of USD 718/ton between 2017 and 2020.

Approximately 75-80% of avocado production in Turkey is produced in Antalya, 15-20% in Mersin and 2-5% in other provinces (Muğla and Hatay). Turkey's main export destinations are Ukraine and the Russian Federation, but the fact that these two countries are at war threatens the continuity of exports. Turkey exported 6% of its total production in 2021. Turkey has many potential advantages in exporting avocados. Both Fuerte and Hass varieties of avocados are grown in Turkey.

Turkey's geographical location provides logistical advantages for exports. In recent years, Turkey has diversified its transportation opportunities in rail and air transportation in addition to sea and land routes. Thanks to its strong infrastructure, Turkey is able to realize exports quickly.
